TDC and Qtel win GSM license in Oman
June 21, 2004
TDC's cooperation agreement with Qatar Telecom, Qtel, which was announced in March, is now becoming more tangible. Today it was announced that the two companies together with a number of local investors from Oman have won the offered GSM mobile license in Oman. Forces must now be joined to start a whole new mobile company from scratch. The company will be called Nawras Telecom. The company’s majority shareholder will be Qtel and, besides TDC, the ownership circle includes a number of local partners in Oman.
”Nawras Telecom is the first visible proof of our cooperation agreement. Qtel has extensive financial strength and has a solid footing and commitment in the region. TDC, on the other hand, has made a strong team of managers available, who have the exact competencies required to start up a new telecom company. TDC has achieved this strength through intense focus on our internal management training,” says TDC’s President and CEO, Henning Dyremose.
He is supplemented by President and CEO of Qtel Dr. Nasser Marafih:
”We are thrilled to have won this license in strong international competition with 28 consortiums, including Vodafone and Orange as well as strong regional players headed by MTC and Cable & Wireless/Batelco. Nawras Telecom aims at a very fast commercial launch, and the company will cover 60 percent of the population in Oman six months after winning the license. Actually, the company will be nationwide at this early point thanks to roaming agreements with state-owned Omantel,” states Dr. Marafih.
The agreement means that Nawras Telecom must build its own mobile network. Within six months, 60 percent of the population of Oman will be covered by Nawras’ network. Within 12 months, 80 percent will be covered and, by the end of 2006, coverage will be extended to 95 percent of the population. This will entail erection of 660 masts.
”Nawras Telecom intends to invest extensively in the competition with the state-owned company Omantel. Furthermore, we will create 440 positions at Nawras Telecom and a further approx. 1,000 new positions at, among other things, local suppliers of the company. The people of Oman will experience improved quality, improved customer care, and new services, including GPRS and EDGE,” says Henning Dyremose.
