Sinaw: the true essence
of Oman’s glorious past

SINAW is one of the Omani towns that has a great status in history for its heritage and role in Oman’s cultural renaissance over the ages.
According to scholars it used to be known as Sana, but later in the course of time the name became Sinaw. The elderly people of the town believe that the town is named after the Sinaw valley, a place between Hoof and Hadhermoot in Yemen.

As Arab tribes were used to move from place to place whenever there was draught or feudal conflicts, a number of these tribes looking for a better place to


live settled in Sinaw and named it after their old place. Located seventeen kilometres west of Al Mudhaibi, it is one of the biggest towns in the area with eleven falajs to water the vast farms and palm gardens Sinaw is famous for. Although only three of them survived droughts, the town is still considered as one of the biggest towns in the area.
There are also ancient tombs dating back to the pre-Islamic era facing Jerusalem which symbolises their religious connection. Excavations in the city have helped to find many important things like coins dating back to pre-Islamic and early Islamic periods. A jar containing more than 962 coins was found hidden in a hole in the ground.

There are also a number of ancient castles and forts in Sinaw. The Aluqair fort which the town’s elderly say date back to Malik Bin Fahem’s time, the famous Omani leader who immigrated from Yemen after the destruction of the Maareb dam and settled in Oman. The fort is named after Aluqair town in Bahla where Malik bin Fahem is believed to have lived.


Aluqair fort is situated in the heart of Sinaw surrounded by old neighborhoods that form the old market. The castle and the neighbouring buildings were rebuilt over the ages.
Before the 1970s renaissance it was very difficult to reach the place by cars, so it was replaced by a more modern market place that offers convenience and ease to local people and visitors.

The fort resembles the one in Nizwa in architectural style and is adjacent to the old market with four guarded gates.

It was built on a hill overlooking palm farms and gardens. The fort is in ruins today but locals hope it will be restored due to its historical significance and the role it played in guarding the town from outside dangers.
It was also the formal residence for many rulers, not only of Sinaw but Oman in general. During the time of Imam Azzan bin Qais, Sultan Turki bin Said bin Sultan, the great grandfather of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos lived in the fort for a while until the death of the Imam.

In the course of time the fort was abandoned. Although Sinaw’s ancient neighborhoods were lively and thriving till recently, most of them were also abandoned over the years as residents moved to modern houses away from the town centre. The elegance and architectural beauty of these buildings are still visible to those visitors who are looking for a glimpse of Oman’s rich past. Throughout history Omanis have believed in the

significance of Sinaw’s geographical location as it falls in the middle of an ancient trade route between north and south of Oman.
Being one of the towns in the Sharqiya region, many surrounding villages are administratively annexed to Sinaw, such as Wasit, Mussalla, Barzaman and Riaml al Sharqiya (Wahiba sands) which are mainly inhibited by Bedouin tribes.

The town is home for more than 153 mosques, some of them are very old but still get full during the time of prayer. There are also 14 sables, a meeting place


for local tribes to gather during events and ceremonies. Probably one of the most interesting elements of life in Sinaw is its traditional souq. It is well-known throughout the country for its diversity of merchandise and activity.
Bedouins from different parts of Sinaw and beyond flock to the souq on weekends to present their live stock, products and merchandise. It’s a very busy place and a central meeting point for locals. The town is also known for breeding some of the best camel species in the Sultanate for racing purposes. Camel and horse races are held during national and religious celebrations round the year to showcase the town’s passion for these sports.

A lot of breeders and potential buyers from different parts of the country and neighbouring countries often come to Sinaw for the quality of the camel species available here. The camels and horses from this region are usually sold at a high price, very often the pricetag reaches tens of thousands of Omani riyal. This in itself is a thriving business Sinaw enjoys better than the rest of the country.
