I am going to tell you about the history of Oman and the development of the country.
Introduction
Oman is situated in the northeast by the gulf of Oman and southeast by the Arabian Sea, south-east by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. There is an enclave at the northern tip of the Musandam Peninsula between the United Arab Emirates of Ras al-Khaima in the west and Fujairah in the southeast.
The name of Oman was the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman before 1970.
Oman was an isolated state having no relations with other Arab or Islamic countries and this isolation prevents the Omanis from many things. Healthcare was not available before 1970.in 1970; there was only one missionary hospital in Muttrah. The number of schools was three schools only. Before 1970 the women were prevented from studying and working .
The new dawn arrived on 23 July, 1970, by way of Sultan Qaboos bin Said's.
Sultan Qaboos bin Said-Al Said has committed himself to improving and bringing up to date the status of his nation – the Sultanate of Oman. Immediately after assuming power on July 23, 1970, His Majesty assured his people of his commitment to renew Oman’s historic glories and to open a brighter door of prosperity and economic and social progress. His hope was to increase knowledge and education. On the day of his accession, he stated: “I promise to you to proceed forthwith in the process of creating a modern government. My first act will be the immediate abolition of all the unnecessary restrictions on your lives and activities … I will proceed as quickly as possible to transform your life into a prosperous and bright future. Every one of you must play his part towards this goal. Our country in the past was famous and strong… Yesterday it was complete darkness and with the help of God, tomorrow will be a new dawn on Muscat, Oman and its people.”
When Oman made its great development in the early 1970s towards a most modern nation, a major change also took place in the lifestyle: people left their traditional housing and built new houses with modern material and equipped for the comfort of air-conditioning. The desertion of almost all traditional settlements beside which new settlements were built. Today we still can count more than seventy traditional complete cities and almost innumerable small settlements and house complexes built of mud brick on stone foundations in the north and stone and wood houses in the south of Oman. Out of the complex of traditional architecture only the many forts have been preserved, of which one, Bahla, is on the World Heritage List.
As in many young nations, in Oman traditional housing does not yet have a high value in public opinion, either. This may be one of the reasons why they are not yet protected heritage places and why the mostly private owners of the buildings do not take care in maintaining them.
Now that his rule has reached the 33th year mark, the country of Oman and its people continue to reap the fruits of His Majesty’s wise leadership and optimistic visionary policies.
In the land of Oman, the people look at the past to provide a platform for the present. In 33 years, the renaissance of a nation has been completed as its people rise to the occasion of beginning a new era in the history of their nation on the eve of a new century.
